A later closing rank means a seat was easier to get. So a candidate ranked around 2,000 had almost nothing in Delhi or Kerala, but still had General Medicine seats to choose from in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and the North East.
How we counted
We used the Round 1 closing ranks in our seat data, which come from MCC's Round 1 allotment result.
- Seats: MD General Medicine, AIQ quota, General (GEN) category. DNB General Medicine is a separate course and is left out.
- Listings: one row per college. Our data has 186 such listings with a 2026 Round 1 closing rank, holding 523 seats. All 523 were allotted in Round 1.
- Left out: 16 more AIQ General Medicine listings in our data had no Round 1 2026 seat, so they have no 2026 closing rank.
- Per state: we took the median closing rank, so half of a state's listings closed earlier and half later. Medians are rounded to the nearest rank.

The other nine states and UTs had one or two listings each. Among them, Chandigarh closed at 155, Meghalaya at 304 and Haryana at a median of 497. Tripura's single listing, Agartala Medical College, closed at 4,180.
Tamil Nadu had the most seats (63) and Maharashtra the most listings (23). Both spread widely: Tamil Nadu from 86 to 2,339, Maharashtra from 107 to 3,207. Karnataka is the clearest case of a median hiding a range. Its earliest seat closed at 136, but half of its 20 listings closed after 2,638. Each state page, such as Karnataka cutoffs, lists every college.
How deep the list went
- Top 100: 6 of the 186 listings closed within rank 100. Three of them were in Delhi.
- Top 500: 33 listings.
- Top 1,000: 60 listings, about one in three.
- Top 2,000: 121 listings, about two in three.
- After 3,000: 24 listings. Four closed after 4,000: Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College, Barpeta (4,010), Agartala (4,180), JNIMS, Imphal (4,600) and Tezpur Medical College (4,703), the latest in the country.
The earliest closing seat was at ABVIMS (Dr RML Hospital), Delhi, at rank 17. NIMS, Hyderabad closed at 47, VMMC, Delhi at 85 and Madras Medical College at 86.
Compared with 2025
157 of the 186 listings also had a Round 1 closing rank in 2025. Of these, 85 closed later in 2026 and 72 closed earlier. The median of those 157 listings moved from 1,269 in 2025 to 1,377 in 2026. So Round 1 in 2026 reached slightly further down the merit list for General Medicine, but the split is close, and many colleges moved the other way. Some state medians rest on only a few listings, so we don't compare states year by year here.
The General Medicine branch page shows every college with its closing rank in each round since 2024.
What it means for Round 2
- Round 2 starts later than first planned. MCC says the Round 2 schedule will run from 7 November 2026 onwards, after NMC sent newly approved seats. The MCC PG counselling page lists its notices and schedules.
- Round 1 resignations close on 9 November. MCC allows candidates who joined in Round 1 to resign until 5 pm on 9 November 2026.
- Round 1 is a guide, not a promise. Closing ranks usually move later in Round 2 as candidates upgrade or leave seats, but not by the same amount at every college.
- Look at the larger states. If your rank is between 2,000 and 3,500, the table shows Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Assam had many listings that closed around or after that rank.
